Heartwood Forge Sale - February 10, 2024

1. Silver Lining - Artisan Nakiri

Highlighting the beauty of salvaged materials is always a goal of mine. Bourbon barrel bands are cut, layered with nickel and fused to recycled high carbon steel. The working edge is a high performance steel while this knife gets it looks from labor intensive recycled cladding. The 6 1/2” blade features a versatile, slightly convex grind that is thin behind the edge and easy to maintain. The full tang bolster imparts a stout feel while the majority hidden tang adds to the comfort and ease of maintenance while shedding weight. Do you see the clouds?

  • size: 6 1/2” blade / 11 3/4” overall / 2 1/8” @ heel

  • weight: 167 grams

  • blade: bourbon barrel strap (Willett Distillery, Bardstown, KY), pure nickel and 52100 roller bearing (Birmingham, AL)

2. Holler Damascus - Integral EuroChef

Forged with lots of love and joy - creating a fingerprint pattern with steel serves to be an incredibly joyful experience. It’s a light hearted day in the shop when I make this steel - repetitious, but random cutting, welding and forging. The pattern creates itself and is impossible to replicate. Once the steel has been created, it’s carefully forged to shape, drawing out the deep, thin blade without damaging the bolster. This blade represents the culmination of my studies with both masters, Bill Burke & Jason Knight. Bill taught me the art of damascus while Jason taught me the art of the integral. Thanks guys!

  • length: 7” blade / 12 1/8” overall / 2” @ heel

  • weight: 170 grams

  • blade: fingerprint damascus, 1084 & 15n20 carbon steel

  • handle: Cherry burl (Athens, GA) & Blackwood (clarinet factory, Paris, France)

  • $1645

3. Feather Chef I - Drop point

Forged with love and a healthy dose of anxiety - this is a favorite pattern of mine. It’s rewarding work to develop the pattern by repetitious cutting, welding and forging. But it’s really the last step that gets me, taking a billet of steel that I have meticulously forged and splitting it down the middle to drag the pattern before fusing it back together with hammer and anvil, creating the unmistakable feather pattern. The pattern on the blade is in the steel itself and will persist through use and patina.

This 8 3/4” chef blade features a versatile, slightly convex grind that is thin behind the edge and easy to maintain. The hidden tang adds comfort and ease of maintenance while shedding weight.

  • size: 8 3/4” blade / 14 1/4” overall / 2 1/8” @ heel

  • weight: 206 grams

  • blade: feather pattern welded high carbon steel

  • handle: Charred Cherry Burl (Athens, GA) & Blackwood (clarinet factory, Paris, France)

  • $2235

44. Large Classic Paring V

In the Classic Collection, I’ve distilled the process and design down to the essentials. This blade is hand forged from a timeless high carbon steel and polished to an easy to maintain satin finish. Inspired by a damascus paring knife from my May 2023 sale, I wanted to recreate similar geometry and offer it in my versatile Classic series. The full tang gives this knife a stout, reliable presence while the drop point imbues it with a useful agility.

  • size: 4” blade / 8 1/2” overall

  • weight: 46 grams

  • blade: 15n20 carbon steel

  • handle: Sycamore (Asheville, NC)
